It is a very good idea to join one of the patient associations. They
provide excellent support and advice for ostomates and internal
pouch wearers, their families and their carers. Here are the three
U.K ostomy associations to choose from depending on your type of
stoma:
The Colostomy Association The Colostomy Association is
a UK registered charity, established in November 2005 to represent
the interests of people with a colostomy. Colostomy is not a
subject that is openly discussed - hence there is a general lack of
public knowledge on what it's like to have a stoma. We offer
support, reassurance and practical information to anyone who may be
about to have, or already has a colostomy. The Association provides
assistance to those who are new to living with a colostomy as well
as those who have been colostomates for many years. Appropriate
support and advice is offered to families and carers both before
and after surgery.
The Ileostomy
and Internal Pouch Support Group IA is a UK registered charity
whose primary aim is to help people who have to undergo surgery
which involves the removal of their colon (known as a colectomy)
and the creation of either an ileostomy or an ileo-anal pouch. IA
was established in 1956 and currently has a membership of around
10,000 throughout the UK and Ireland.
The Urostomy
Association The Association was formed in 1971 as the Urinary
Conduit Association to help people who are about to undergo or have
undergone surgery resulting in diversion of the urinary stream. In
1984 the name was changed to the Urostomy Association (UA). The
Aims of the Urostomy Association: To assist those who are about to
undergo or who have undergone surgery which results in a urinary
diversion. To improve the quality of life of people who have
undergone urinary diversion surgery and those who care for them. To
undertake such research as the membership feels is necessary to
enhance the life of members.
If you are a new ostomate, currently reside in Scotland and are
feeling things quite tight at the moment. The foundation will pay
for your first annual subscribtion fee to one of these patient
associations. Some require a membership fee, some don't. (if your a
new double ostomate then foundation will cover both fees).
Please note: Due to the foundations tight budget, please do
not abuse this offer, if you honestly can't meet the fees, then the
foundation will happily help you out.
